Workplace safety just got a major upgrade at our office! We've partnered with St John Ambulance for Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training (better known as CPR). As part of our ongoing BCorp commitments, We are installing an external AED device to ensure that our local community is supported.
Why AED and CPR Training Matter
AED and CPR training is crucial because it allows trained employees to act immediately during a cardiac emergency, making those critical minutes count. The numbers don't lie, and if a cardiac arrest victim is defibrillated within the first 3 minutes from collapse, they have a 70% chance of survival.
The fantastic part is that anyone can use an AED device, but the training we undertook gave us the confidence to act quickly in an event and provide CPR alongside the device.
If you have taken on first aid training before, you might not know that the recovery position has changed. Here is an image of the new recovery position
Implementing AED and CPR Training
We chose St John Ambulance because of their practical, workplace-focused training. The hands-on practice with manikins and AED trainer allowed us to experience real-life scenarios, boosting our confidence and competence. Our excellent trainer brought a range of different devices that we could try and taught us fantastic techniques when providing CPR.
Buying and Installing an AED
After some research, we picked a reliable, user-friendly AED model for our office. It’s centrally located right next to our front door access with clear signage, for quick access during emergencies.
Additionally, we have provided each of the offices nearby with a sign that they can put on their office notice boards, with where our AED is and its code to unlock it.
Promoting a Safety-First Culture
We plan to continue our goal of having the whole office trained, whether that is mental health, first aid, or CPR training. We believe an ongoing education to reinforce the importance of quick action can save people's lives.
Conclusion
By integrating AED and CPR training with St John Ambulance and installing an AED, we've taken a big step in boosting workplace safety. We are confident, prepared, and ready to act when it matters most.
